Program Description
 

Step out of your everyday life -- out of your comfort zone -- and into in-depth, experiential learning and cultural immersion.  The Border Immersion Experience is an opportunity to learn about the issues that affect lives of people living on the border.  The program includes:

 

• Fellowship at El Paso-Ciudad Juárez fence

• Presentations at various social justice ministries
• Assisting with After School Program
• Personal accounts of border life
• Exposure to Mexican & Mexican-American culture
• Tours of colonias (rural settlements) in El Paso
• Daily processing and Bible Study available

• Bilingual worship at Cristo Rey
• Visit to ministries in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico available upon request

2010 - present

This week has a potential to be overwhelming physically, emotionally and spiritually. For this reason, the minimum age for participants is 15. Church, high school groups, universities, and seminary students participate.  The most effective group size is seven to thirteen people.

Cost

• $350 per participant fee
• $350 non-refundable deposit (applies toward group total)
• $200 cash gratuity for cleaning & transportation costs
• Food & other personal expenses

Groups stay in two dorm-style rooms complete with bunks, shower facilities, towels and linens. Free wi-fi available.

Groups prepare the majority of meals throughout the week.  Two meals are provided as a part of the experience.  There are additional opportunities for local restaurant dining.  Kitchen facilities are available for use.

El Paso is hot during summer when temperatures tend to be in the 90's and cold during winter when temperatures tend to be in the 40's. Temperature variations between night and day tend to be a difference of 20-25⁰F.

During the springtime, winds can be up to 60mph.  The annual average precipitation at El Paso is less than 10 inches, distributed fairly evenly throughout the year.

Cristo Rey provides transportation while in El Paso, including trips to and from the airport. Please note that additional transportation fees will be charged for groups larger than 18 people.

Spanish language skills are helpful, but not necessary. Translators are provided.
